TARIMIAT

The Amazon is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, home to thousands of species found nowhere else in the world. However, this region faces increasing pressures that threaten not only its forests and landscapes but also the very lives of the animals that inhabit them. According to scientific estimates, more than 46 million animals were seized or recovered between 2010 and 2025 as a result of illegal wildlife trafficking in the Amazon, a figure that could be even higher due to the difficulty of recording all cases. In addition, wildlife trafficking, driven by a global illicit demand valued at over 23 billion dollars annually, represents one of the most lucrative illegal activities and poses a serious threat to native animal populations.

In response to this urgent and pressing reality, Tarimiat was established as a sanctuary for wildlife that has been affected by these activities, ranging from direct mistreatment to the forced removal from their natural habitats. Maribel has developed this refuge with a clear vision: to assist and support each individual through its recovery process, with the goal of returning it to the wild when its health and behavior allow, or providing lifelong care if release is not feasible.

What is Hortus Deliciarum’s contribution?

Marcelo Fernández, CEO of Hortus Deliciarum, has taken on a fundamental role in supporting this vision through the sponsorship of rescued animals at Tarimiat. This support includes:

• Funding specialized treatments, from veterinary care to nutritional therapies tailored to each species.

• Providing rehabilitation spaces designed to stimulate natural behaviors essential for recovery.

• Supporting preparation for safe reintroduction into the wild, whenever biological conditions allow.

• Assisting in the documentation and scientific monitoring, creating case records that can be used for awareness and educational purposes.

Through this sponsorship, each animal ceases to be a statistic and becomes a tangible life, with a name, story, and future. The project not only provides immediate assistance but also lays the groundwork for educational and awareness programs that Tarimiat aims to develop in the future, so that understanding and respecting animals becomes the norm rather than the exception.

With the support of Hortus Deliciarum, Tarimiat does not only respond to immediate emergencies; it also builds bridges toward a more humane and respectful relationship with wildlife. Each sponsored life represents a step toward collective responsibility and understanding, reminding us that the true measure of a project’s significance is found in the lives it manages to transform.
